Employee Spotlight: Claudette Patterson

A native of Dalton, Georgia, Claudette Patterson came to Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. after working for a general contractor, bringing with her a wealth of industry knowledge and a positive spirit. Claudette loves to help others—a quality that shows in her work every day.

Current Role

As a project manager, Claudette spends her time liaising with superintendents, construction managers, and leadership. She aligns her team’s efforts, helping them to stay connected throughout each job. Claudette believes that communication is what helps bring the team together, as she says, “I know that when everyone is working toward a common goal, projects remain on schedule and within budget, without sacrificing quality.” Through her work, Claudette illustrates that she is dedicated to Maxwell’s clients, providing them with the outstanding service they expect out of every job.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out

It only took one year in her role for Claudette to be affirmed that she truly loves being a part of the Maxwell family. “We are a family, not a payroll ID number. This is an amazing company that values the opinions of the people on this team—and the whole company is a team.” She also enjoys the quality of our work and the overall company culture. “Maxwell is fair, honest, and you really want to work hard for the common goal because you are valued. That’s the bottom line.”

Personal

When she’s not in the office, you’ll find Claudette spending time with her four rescued bulldogs. She also serves as a deacon at her church, enjoys any opportunity to be at the beach, and, one day, she hopes to travel to Ireland to explore the Emerald Isle.

Employee Spotlight: Martha Walden

Martha Walden grew up in Mobile, Alabama, where she graduated from 20th Century College with a major in Business Administration. She came to Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. with an extensive and well-rounded background in accounting, having worked accounting roles in the manufacturing, treasury, restaurant, and property management industries. Martha joined the Maxwell Roofing team 8 years ago as Accounts Payable Manager, and she has loved her time with the company.

Current Role

As Accounts Payable Manager, Martha’s days in the office are always exciting. She not only handles the payables function but also acts as a liaison for the service and construction departments. “I can plan my day, but it never goes as planned,” she says. Her versatile role keeps her work interesting and presents new challenges daily.

Martha works with a team of three. Her team’s external clients are suppliers who provide materials or services. The team’s internal clients are officers, project managers, estimators, and superintendents.

Her main focus is to clearly understand each of her team member’s roles and how they work together to reach their goals. By providing her team with a platform to ask questions, offer new ideas, and talk openly about opportunities for improvement, Martha creates a collaborative environment.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out

Martha’s passion for her job stems from her excellent contributions to her team. She says, “The one thing I love about Maxwell is having the ability to use my talent in such a way that, at the end of the day, I feel very confident about my contribution.” As she has always loved working with numbers, Martha knows that accounting is her niche. Her penchant for numbers led her to this career, but it’s Maxwell’s culture and team collaboration that keeps her with us.

Personal

When she’s not in the office, you’ll find Martha in the kitchen, at a fresh seafood restaurant, or traveling. She adores cooking for her family—her husband, three daughters, five grandchildren, and her mother, who recently turned 100 years old. Once she retires, Martha has set her sights on traveling the world—especially to her favorite city, Dubai.

Employee Spotlight: Jackie Sprout

Jackie Sprout grew up in Hendersonville, Tennessee before heading to Middle Tennessee State University. After college, she launched a career in service and sales and eventually worked as an install coordinator for multiple HVAC companies. After more than 20 years in these industries, Jackie decided she wanted something new and started a job at Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. as a service coordinator. She has now been at Maxwell for almost two years.

Current Role

As a service coordinator, Jackie works with a team of 16 other people in the service department. She works every day to create and schedule service tickets for commercial property owners, managers, and contractors. After the roof work is done, Jackie also creates reports and bills companies for the work.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out

For Jackie, it’s her coworkers at Maxwell that really make the company stand out. “We genuinely like working with each other and are a happy team,” says Jackie. She enjoys the challenge of busy days where lots of service calls come in. Though demanding, Jackie says that these busy days show why her department is so special. “Our department is unique because of our ability to multitask during extremely busy service days,” she adds.

Personal

In her free time, Jackie enjoys painting and works in both acrylic and oils. She has a grown son, Drew, and an eight-year-old bulldog and chihuahua mix named Tic-Tac. Jackie hopes to travel more in the future, but she has plenty of hobbies like skydiving, kayaking, parasailing, roller skating, and hiking.

Employee Spotlight: Dan Maxwell

Born and raised in Nashville, Dan Maxwell grew up interested in manufacturing. After graduating from high school, he went to Tennessee Technological University and then entered an apprenticeship program for tool designers. After graduating, Dan entered the manufacturing industry, where he spent 15 years. Dan joined the family business 26 years ago when his brother John was looking to expand.

Current Role

Dan works at Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. as a company Vice President and Senior Estimator. He works alongside the sales department to determine the approximate costs of different projects. To do that, Dan and his team determines the scope of work for a given project and establishes pricing for each element. Based on this proposal, Dan and other estimators write proposals for the project and work orders for the materials once the project is contracted. To make these estimates, Dan works with facility managers, building owners, designers, and general contractors. Dan’s precision and technical knowledge is what makes him so valuable to the Maxwell team. He is dedicated to solving problems and establishing the proper scope of work. Dan is able to look at the overall building envelope and assist in discussing other issues or conditions with anyone from facility managers to building owners, while also diagnosing the roofing problems and providing cost-effective solutions.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out

Dan loves working on the Maxwell team because of the company’s core values of professionalism, quality, and safety. By being a family-owned business, Dan says the team feels closer and more accountable to each other.

“I love working alongside individuals who display integrity and professionalism,” Dan said. “I think that’s what makes Maxwell Roofing like a family and what makes the company successful.”

Personal

When he’s not working, Dan likes to spend time with his wife and five kids at home. The family also has a cat and a dog. Dan and his son enjoy biking, hiking, and camping together, and when he’s at home, Dan likes to work on his house. Dan’s favorite place to travel is to Florida’s beaches.

Employee Spotlight: Keith Stiles

Keith Stiles joined the Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. team in 1997 as a partial owner of the company. Keith came to Maxwell with ten years of commercial roofing experience back in his home state of Arkansas. For the past 22 years, Keith has worked alongside John Maxwell and Dan Maxwell to use new technologies and practices to grow the business.

Current Role:

During his tenure at Maxwell Roofing, Keith has held multiple roles. He is currently Senior Vice President, pursuing profitable work for the Maxwell Roofing team. Keith spends his busy days meeting with property owners, general contractors, and government and industrial building managers. Through these meetings, Keith works to identify new projects for the Maxwell team and then develops them into profitable opportunities. While Keith works with other sales team members, his work requires a great deal of independence and intrinsic motivation. “My role is somewhat autonomous and very fulfilling,” says Keith.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc. Stands Out:

For Keith, it’s Maxwell’s professionalism and commitment to good work that makes the company stand out from competitors. Keith believes these values are best reflected through Maxwell’s employees. Above all, Keith takes Maxwell’s professionalism and core values very seriously and expects the same of all Maxwell employees. He affirms, “We have a strong and dedicated workforce. The diversity within our team is bountiful.”

Personal:

Beyond the office, Keith is always looking to make the best of life. While he loves working hard for Maxwell, Keith still dreams of making it big some other way. He jokes, “I’m forever on the pursuit of winning the lottery.”

Employee Spotlight: Jonathan Costello

Originally from upstate New York, Jonathan Costello set out to attend college at Louisiana State University, Baton Rouge. After earning his Bachelor’s Degree in industrial engineering, Jonathan joined the Louisiana National Guard as an electronics technician, where he served in both Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm. When he returned to Louisiana, Jonathan got a job in the oil and gas industry, eventually taking on a project management role in offshore construction in the Gulf of Mexico. After 25 years in oil and gas, Jonathan desired a change. He had heard good things about Nashville and began looking for project management opportunities in the city’s booming construction industry. After meeting with the Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. family, Jonathan knew he wanted to be a part of the team, and the opportunity presented itself in January of 2017.

Current Role:

As a project manager, Jonathan works closely with the project estimator, project superintendent, general superintendent, and sheet metal lead to ensure that roof construction runs smoothly. “We are all working with the common goal of executing a project safely, per the specifications, on time, and within the budget,” says Jonathan. After he meets with his project management team, Jonathan works with superintendents to address any issues on current projects and to plan for upcoming projects. He oversees everything from the creation of work and safety plans to making sure that construction crews have the materials they need to do their jobs. Jonathan also works with a variety of clients, including property management firms, general contractors, building owners, and engineers to keep them up to speed on their projects. Because he doesn’t work on project estimates or pre-planning, Jonathan can focus all his efforts on project execution.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal Inc. Stands Out:

Jonathan loves the accessibility of executives and managers at Maxwell Roofing, especially in that it allows him to get answers to questions and to get issues resolved quickly. Jonathan attributes Maxwell’s flat organizational structure and informal work culture as a key factor in helping team members get things done efficiently. “At Maxwell Roofing, everyone works for a common goal with no agendas,” affirms Jonathan.

Personal:

Outside of work, Jonathan is an avid cyclist. Several times, he has ridden 100 miles in a day to raise money for charity. He also enjoys backpacking, hiking, and kayaking. Jonathan and his wife, Jena, have been married for 30 years. They have two sons, Ryan and Evan, and a brown lab/chow mix named Hershey. A true New Yorker, Jonathan likes Italian food and New York-style pizza.

Employee Spotlight: Jon Carpenter

Background:

A very proud “cheese head” (in his own words), Jon Carpenter grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin before eventually making his way to Music City. As a graduate of Grace Christian University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, Jon holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Digital Media Production. After college, Jon applied his education and natural skill set to the retail technical service industry for nearly five years. Growing up in a family business himself, Jon gained a valuable work ethic in customer service by answering phones, confirming appointments, and maintaining the buildings and property of several offices for his father’s chiropractic practice in Milwaukee. In early 2017, as life circumstances found him freshly planted in Nashville, Jon took on the newly-developed full-time role as Formwell Account Manager, working directly with customers outside Maxwell Roofing to service sheet metal sales.

Current Role:

In his current role as Formwell Account Manager, an average day for Jon can involve receiving pricing requests, orders or inquiries from customers, organizing and creating customer drawings, creating materials lists, and more. Jon is also responsible for obtaining current pricing on materials and finding the best prices to pass on to Formwell’s customers, while creating estimates for products and responding to any of the customers’ changes in design or last minute requests. Jon explains, “Formwell is a smaller part of Maxwell Roofing, which allows us to be able to react to changes on a jobsite during the week and sometimes even the day of.”

As for Formwell’s team dynamic, Jon says, “Our Formwell team is small and highly-skilled in the many areas that sheet metal fabrication requires. We are dedicated to precision and ready to knock out any job, large or small. Our shop foreman, Carl Rand, is detail-oriented and works well with our superintendents and our fabricators to make sure the drawings are correct and the final product is up to spec. When other folks don’t know how to build something, our team can usually figure it out.”

Jon and the Formwell team work closely with other trades, including masons, green roofers, landscapers, roofing contractors, and building maintenance companies. “We also have a few customers unique to Music City, such as light and staging companies, tour coach leasing companies, and even custom guitar builders,” adds Jon. As for what makes his department special, Jon says, “Being focused solely on metal is pretty unique. Specializing in sheet metal fabrication allows the superintendents in our roofing department and our customers to focus on other things. They can put their trust in us and be confident our metal is ready to install.”

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out:

As a Maxwell Roofing employee, Jon appreciates that team members make sure that all work is done right. He explains, “Planning out a job is half the battle, as well as making sure the moving parts can navigate problems as they arise. Maxwell employees know that good work is worth the time it takes.” Jon also takes pride in Maxwell’s craftsmanship. “When I see a stack of parts in the workshop and they are all uniform and made just right, it’s great to know that we made those parts. I like seeing our products fitting our customer needs and helping them solve a problem,” affirms Jon.

Formwell has been behind some of the biggest projects in Nashville (i.e. the flashing behind all the stone installed at the new Tennessee State Museum and the edge metal around the green roof on the Music City Center), though it often gets covered up and put out of sight. Jon loves that those customers come back to Maxwell Roofing again and again, as they keep making quality products.

Personal:

Outside of his Formwell duties, Jon enjoys cycling, XC skiing, camping, and woodworking. Jon lives on a farm just outside of Nashville with his wife Rachel and their Great Pyrenees Branch, who’s supposed to be a guard dog but loves meeting new people a little too much to fulfill those duties. As for Jon’s personal goals or dreams, he puts having a thriving family and business at the top. Among Jon’s favorite places includes Lake Superior in every season. He explains, “Lake Superior is always crisp and cool. The distinct and varying shorelines running between Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan were a constant for me growing up. Almost anywhere along its banks will make you stop and watch it for a while.

Employee Spotlight: David Maxwell

Background:

A true Nashville, Tennessee native (which is rare these days in the bustling and growing city), David Maxwell lived in St. Louis, Missouri and Austin, Texas for extended periods before moving back home to Music City shortly after the city’s notorious flood in 2010. David graduated from Saint Louis University with a bachelor’s degree in psychology. After realizing that job options were limited in the psychology field without an advanced degree, he began working in restaurants to pay the bills. He quickly fell in love with the fast-paced action and customer service oriented business. With a new found passion for the food service industry, he enrolled in culinary school, where he graduated with a culinary arts degree. Prior to David’s venture into the commercial roofing world, he put his culinary skills to work by serving as a cook and chef at various restaurants in both Austin and Nashville. “My tenure in the hospitality and service industry prepared me well for our service-forward and customer satisfaction-driven business model at Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.,” explains David, who ended up leaving the restaurant and hospitality industry to adopt a more regular work schedule. “In thinking about my future and family prospects, I began to mull the possibilities of such a career change, and the family roofing business entered my mind, deliberately, for the first time in my life,” says David, who’s now entering his seventh year with the company.

Current Role:

As Vice President of Services at Maxwell Roofing, no single day looks the same for David. Serving alongside a dedicated and talented service team of around thirty people from office administration to management to service sales and estimation to technicians, David works most closely with Maxwell’s operations and account management team members. When it comes to client interaction, David says, “On any given day, I may work directly with building owners, contractors, property managers, building engineers, and facility maintenance employees.”

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out:

What does David appreciate most about the family business? He says, “I value that our company takes time to invest in people. We understand that, ultimately, we are in the relationship business. Our focus is to manage and exceed expectations with all employees and customers.” David is also appreciative of his team, saying “My team is very good at what they do, and they have responded well to some significant organizational changes throughout the past year. They have been positive, upbeat, and able to surpass our most recent annual goals amid noteworthy changes and departmental transformation.” David believes that the culture of the Maxwell team revolves around mutual trust and respect. With a relatively young department that has a diverse range of strengths, David knows he can count on team members to fulfill their roles and responsibilities. “We are experiencing some ambitious growth initiatives and adapting to the accompanying changes with professionalism and enthusiasm. I’m very proud of the fact that our team daily raises the bar and refuses to settle for mediocrity,” affirms David.

Personal:

Outside of work, you can find David doing just about anything outdoors, especially swimming, hiking, and running. A huge fan of the Nashville Predators since the team’s inception, David always looks forward to attending hockey games at Bridgestone Arena. He’s the proud father of two very active young boys, Henry (age 3) and Gilbert (age 2) and enjoys every moment of quality time he gets to spend with them. A lover of the Appalachian Mountains, one of David’s bucket list items is to hike the Appalachian Trail from start to finish at some point. David also enjoys day trips to various local and state parks with his sons. They particularly love the Fall Creek Falls area, as well as the Smoky Mountains. As a former chef, David surprisingly doesn’t hit up Nashville’s growing culinary scene much anymore, however, he and his sons enjoy visiting some of Music City’s best lunch spots, and they’ve become quite fond of both Hugh Baby’s and Hattie B.’s these days.

Employee Spotlight: Kathleen Maxwell

Background:

Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Kathleen Maxwell says you can call her a “unicorn” in today’s melting pot of Nashville residents who have moved from various places to call Music City home. Bearing the Maxwell family name, Kathleen’s journey to working for the family business was not one she was planning. After graduating from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville with a major in English (Creative Writing concentration) and a minor in Marketing, Kathleen originally had plans to enter the event planning industry. However, after considering the field and being offered several unpaid internships, she realized she needed money, and she needed it quick. She explains, “Many friends kept telling me I should work for Maxwell Roofing, and why not, right? So, after a conversation with my dad about what that would look like, I joined the Maxwell Roofing team as a marketing associate.” At the time, Kathleen had no intentions of making a career at Maxwell Roofing, but rather using it as a stepping stone. Fast forward five years later, she has no other plans but to stay put and grow in her role. “I realized how severely underserved the roofing industry is, and I believe that our company is built on a great foundation and that we can consistently position ourselves as a value leader in the service and sales markets of the roofing industry,” affirms Kathleen.

Current Role:

In her current role as Vice President of Sales, an average day on the job for Kathleen can look very different from day to day. She explains, “Our company is focused on strategic growth and pointing our team toward success. No day is the same, but that’s what makes it exciting.” From yearly marketing planning to creating and implementing sales strategies, Kathleen stays busy keeping things moving along and being a solutions provider. Among her favorite parts of her role include coaching, motivating, and supporting the Maxwell Roofing sales team. Kathleen also enjoys meeting with clients and prospects and learning about their business needs and any issues they may be experiencing that the Maxwell team can solve. Kathleen and her team work on a daily basis with property managers, facility managers, industrial and corporate owners, as well as private owners.

As leader of the sales team, Kathleen oversees two account managers and four estimators, and she’s excited about growing and expanding the team. “Our sales team is close-knit and works together with the service and construction divisions. In a healthy way, our sales team relies on our operations to deliver the service we stand behind, and operations relies on sales to contribute and deliver the work to be done! I think it’s a great, communicative relationship that requires a careful balance,” says Kathleen.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out:

When asked what she loves about the company as a whole, Kathleen says, “Well, I’m slightly biased, considering my grandfather started the company, but I’d say first that, contrary to my initial naive belief, our roofing company requires the same passion, drive, and goals as any other business, and what we do truly matters.” Kathleen also loves that the individuals who make up the company believe this and stand behind it.

Something else that stands about Maxwell Roofing to Kathleen is that her team is eager to learn and is open to change and growth. “My team is focused on crushing their goals—both business and personal—and I’m truly grateful for the positive attitudes they bear daily,” she adds.

With a competitive, hungry, and smart team culture, Kathleen praises her team’s diverse skills in relationship management and roofing expertise, which she has observed to be continually growing with time. “Our goal is to make your roof last longer. By forming partnerships with our customers, we learn about their facilities, roofing needs, and future plans. If we truly understand our client’s needs, it positions us to better assist them in proactively managing their assets, rather than any last-minute major repairs,” says Kathleen.

Personal:

Outside of work, you might find Kathleen hitting up a Hotbox (kickboxing + strength conditioning) class, hiking, exploring some of Nashville’s latest eateries, and hanging on her patio with her pup and friends. Kathleen also enjoys every opportunity to plan a weekend adventure to new cities. She also enjoys quality time with her fiancé, Clayton, who she’ll marry in September of 2018! “Clayton and I just bought a home in Nashville’s Crieve Hall, and we have a Golden Pyrenees Mix, Otto.”

The youngest of four siblings, Kathleen serves at Maxwell Roofing alongside her brother, David, who joined the Maxwell team about 9 months prior and is the oldest sibling. Kathleen and David have two sisters between them—Sarah and Rachel—who are not in the family business. Kathleen’s parents, John and Betty Ann live in West Nashville, and they enjoy having Sunday dinners to gather and catch up on life outside of work. Kathleen is also the proud aunt of two adorable nephews (David’s sons), Henry (age 3) and Gilbert (age 2), who she says keeps her on toes.

Employee Spotlight: Brian Mecomber

Originally from Michigan, Brian Mecomber grew up in Houston, Texas. In 1996, Brian made the move to Huntsville, Alabama, where he now serves as the Service Account Manager for Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc’s regional office. Prior to joining the Maxwell Roofing team in 2017, Brian spent the last 14 years in the uniform rental and facility services industry. With his current role being his first experience in the construction and roofing industry, Brian has enjoyed the refreshing career change, and Maxwell Roofing has quickly become a home away from home.

As for what led Brian to the Maxwell Roofing team, he says, “While looking for a career change, I was contacted by a recruiter and consultant representing Maxwell Roofing. After exploring the opportunity further and meeting the Maxwell family, joining the team was an easy decision, and I enjoy representing the Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. brand in Huntsville and the Northern Alabama region.”

Current Role:

As Service Account Manager, a typical day for Brian involves updating company databases and following up with clients via phone or email regarding roof repair proposals. Brian also does in-person visits with current and prospective customers who contact him in regards to their roofing needs. “A main part of my role is coming up with action plans and repair proposals for customers. Finding solutions for our customers’ needs is truly a rewarding part of the job,” says Brian.

As for Brian’s team dynamic, he works closely with Maxwell Roofing’s service estimator to come up with the best approach to all repair proposals for customers. Brian also works closely with Maxwell Roofing’s service manager and service technicians to make sure all jobs run smoothly and meet customer expectations. “On the customer side, I mostly work with property managers and facility or maintenance managers at industrial companies in the North Alabama region. I have the great honor of building and growing business relationships with our customer base to ensure customer loyalty,” Brian adds.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out:

When it comes to what he loves about working at Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc., Brian affirms, “I love that Maxwell Roofing is a family-owned company that prides itself on being the best and most reliable roofing company in the market.” Brian also speaks highly of his Huntsville-based team, saying, “Our Huntsville team is very helpful, and we work well together. Each team member is always there when I need assistance with anything.” Brian enjoys the competitive and hardworking spirit he sees on display from his colleagues, which is something he truly believes makes Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. stand apart in the roofing industry.

Personal:

Beyond the office, Brian’s hobbies involve playing golf whenever he gets the opportunity, as well as training in Muay Thai Kickboxing and Brazilian Jui Jitsu. Brian enjoys family time, especially venturing to the 30A beaches near Destin, Florida with them each year. The Mecomber family has a mini schnauzer named Brody. As for any lifelong personal goals and dreams, Brian says, “My goals are to put both of my children through college and have enough money left over to live comfortably.” Here’s to conquering those worthy goals!

Employee Spotlight: John Maxwell

The popular phrase, “never say never,” is something John Maxwell understands well. With no intentions of ever working in the family business, Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.’s president now proudly carries the torch of his family’s business legacy in Middle Tennessee, Southern Kentucky, and Northern Alabama. John’s father, Ken Maxwell, a decorated B-17 Bomber Squadron Commander, started the business as Maxwell-Webster Roofing in 1956 as a Nashville branch of the company he worked for in Knoxville. In 1963, Ken bought the Nashville branch from the former owners and established Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.

Before graduating from Tennessee Technology University in 1976 with a degree in electrical engineering, John worked for the family business during his summer breaks in various roles from helping in the business office to assisting estimators and project managers. Upon graduation, John found himself diving in full-time at Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc., where he has served for the past 42 years.

From his beginnings as an estimator trainee, John never imagined how his career would evolve during the next six years. In 1982, John’s father fell off a roof, landing on his head and injuring him extensively. Though he recovered substantially, Ken couldn’t continue managing the company, and John took on a general manager role to keep things moving along for Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. In 1986, John formally became the company president and majority stockholder.

“The 80s were tough for Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.,” says John. “With the generational shift in leadership and a compilation of industry changes, we muddled through,” he added. As the commercial roofing industry had been dominated by the old “built-up” tar and gravel style roof, technology gave way to single-ply roofing during the 1980s. The 1990s were more stable for Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc., as single-ply roofing gained popularity, and the company was tuned into the growing trend. “The 90s were a decade of growth for Maxwell. We consolidated the company and entered a season of expansion,” affirms John.

In 1993, John hired his brother, Dan, to join the company from the automotive industry as parts/tools designer. Dan is still here today and is one of the owners of the company. In 1997, another stockholder, Keith Stiles, joined Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. with a reputable roofing background in Arkansas. “The three of us have been growing the business ever since,” says John. Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. has been operating in the same industry and geography, using evolving technologies and practices, to serve the same market for more than 60 years.

“If you’re in an industry that values reliability, it’s hard to look past longevity,” says John. “When somebody has been doing the same thing we’ve been doing for as long as we’ve been doing it, it suggests we’re doing something right,” he affirms. In 2010, Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. started a small office in Huntsville, Alabama, where it continues to grow. John explains, “We wanted to bring the same stability and reliability we are committed to in Middle Tennessee and Southern Kentucky into the North Alabama region, and it has proven to be a good decision.”

Today, John is proud that two of his own children, Kathleen and David, have been involved in the family business for several years and that they will carry the business forward to a new generation. “Seeing my children step in and serve in such leadership capacities truly shows our family commitment to the business and the commercial roofing industry,” says John.

Current Role:

As the company president, John’s current role is significantly different than it was at first. “For most of my career, I wasn’t truly a company president. I was more of an operating manager who was involved in business tasks such as sales, project management, general management, and more,” says John. Only in the last few years has John backed away from most of the daily business operations. As he prepares to pass the baton, his main goal is to make sure things run more smoothly than when he took over. “It is now necessary for me to remove myself from being a part of every small company detail. Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.’s growth has lended to the need for a true president who oversees the company’s vision,” says John.

John now has five direct reports and around 75 employees who handle the day-to-day operations, and he tries to be a resource for anything they might need. “I love testifying to our company’s capabilities to current and potential clients who want to know we are both capable and reliable. I get involved in strategic accounts and am still involved in overall administration,” he adds.

Why Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. Stands Out:

“If you look at what we’ve done rather than just what we say, you’ll see who we truly are,” says John. Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc. has been on the same street in Nashville for 62 years. They’ve been considered as a tier-one roofing company and are leaders in the market not by their acclamation but by their results. John explains, “The real competition (the ones who are truly ‘in the business’) does what it takes to be ‘in the business.’ The others are just imitators.” One of Maxwell Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.’s core values is professionalism, which is evident to our customers. “Keith told one of our employees once, ‘This is how I feed my family.’ Our work is thatserious, and such a statement is the mark of a professional. The professional takes the challenges of life seriously. The amateur tries everything but doesn’t plant and dedicate his or her life to the vocation. Professionalism requires a high level of confidence. People who want to do business with us do so because we take our work seriously and are confident in our abilities and service,” affirms John.

Personal:

A true Middle Tennessean, John grew up in Nashville, Tennessee, attending the Saint Henry School and Father Ryan High School. Beyond the office, John a genuine family man. John and his wife, Betty Ann, have been married since 1977 and just recently celebrated their 41st wedding anniversary. Together, John and Betty Ann have four children—David, Sarah, Rachel, and Kathleen. They have two grandchildren, Henry and Gilbert, both David’s sons. On occasion, you can find John golfing or exploring the outdoors at Percy Warner Park (which he’s been doing since age 5).
